This is about the app of Dierenpark Hoenderdaell, an animal park in the Netherlands. We keep it short and in plain language, because you should be able to see what happens to your data without needing a lawyer.
In short: your data sits on our own server in Amsterdam. We do not sell it, we do not trade it, and there is not a single advertising or analytics service in the app. You can delete your account in the app at any time, and then it really is gone.
The newsletter is off by default. If you want it, you tick that box yourself, and one switch turns it off again.

Why you need an account
With an account the app remembers who you are, which language you want it in, and which tickets are yours. That is how you can have your ticket scanned at the entrance and get a nudge before a show starts.
What we keep
| What | What for | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your name | To greet you in the app | As long as your account exists |
| Your e-mail address | To log in, and for the newsletter if you want it | As long as your account exists |
| Your password | To log in | Stored encrypted; we cannot read it ourselves |
| Your language | So the app is in your language on every device | As long as your account exists |
| Whether you want the newsletter | Only to know whether we may send you anything | As long as your account exists |
| Your tickets and annual pass | To show your QR code and check it at the entrance | See "if you delete your account" below |
| Reminders you set | To nudge you in time before a show | Disappear by themselves a day after that show |
| A key from your device for notifications | Only if you turn notifications on | Until you turn them off or delete your account |
Your location
On the park map you can see where you are walking. That location stays on your own device: where exactly you are does not reach us, and we cannot see which route you walked. You do not have to allow it if you do not want to use it; the rest of the app works fine either way.
Your device does report that you are in the park, as soon as you open the map with your location on. Of that we keep only your account number, the date and the last moment we saw you, and it is gone the same day. That way we can reach you if something is going on, for example a lost child, and send you a tip at most once a day. Your ticket scanned at the entrance counts for this too.
Notifications
Notifications are off until you turn them on yourself. When you do, your device gets its own key that lets us send a message. All that tells us is that it is your device, not which device it is or where it is. You can turn it off whenever you like, in the app under My account or in your phone settings.
What we do not do
- No advertising services, no analytics services, no trackers.
- No cookies to follow you around. The app only keeps your login on your own device.
- No reselling or exchanging of your data.
- No profiles of how you move around the park: we only keep track of whether you are inside, not where you walk or what you look at.
Who can reach your data
Only park staff who need it for their work. For the newsletter the park can request a list of the people who said yes to it: that list holds only name, e-mail address, language and the date they signed up. Anyone who said no is not on it.
The server is hosted at DigitalOcean in Amsterdam. They look after the machine, we look after what is on it.
Parties outside the park
The app fetches a few things from elsewhere. Those parties then see your device's IP address, because otherwise they cannot send anything back.
- OpenStreetMap provides the tiles of the park map. That happens as soon as you open the map.
- hoenderdaell.nl provides the news and its photos.
- The park's films are hosted on the park's own server. Nothing is loaded until you tap play yourself.
- Mailchimp sends the park's newsletter. Only if you turn the newsletter on do your email address, your first name and your language choice go there. Mailchimp is an American company, so that data is held outside Europe. If you turn the newsletter off again, we unsubscribe you there straight away.
- The park's webshop opens when you tap tickets or annual pass. The privacy statement of that webshop applies there.
- Stichting Leeuw and SOS Dolfijn only open if you tap donate yourself.
- The notification service of your browser or phone (for example Google, Apple or Mozilla) delivers our notifications. Only if you turned notifications on.
- Google Fonts provides, in the web version, the font for the emoji you see in the app, such as the little animals on the map pins. All other letters we ship ourselves. In the app on your phone this does not happen either, because it uses the emoji of your own device.
Your IP address
When you log in or create an account, the server holds your IP address in memory for fifteen minutes. That is only there to stop anyone from trying thousands of passwords. It is not stored, and no visitor log is kept.
If you delete your account
You can do that yourself in the app, under My account. At that moment your name, e-mail address, password, language, notification setting and your reminders are removed. Tickets you have not used yet go as well.
Of a ticket that has already been scanned at the entrance, only the code and the date remain, without who it belonged to. The park needs to be able to check how many people came in, but that does not need your name attached.
Your rights
- See your data: it is in the app under My account.
- Have something corrected: send us an e-mail and we will do it.
- Have everything deleted: you do that yourself in the app.
- Withdraw your newsletter consent: one switch in the app.
- Not happy with how we handle it? You can always complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or to the authority in your own country.
Children
If you are under 16, please ask your parents or guardians whether they are happy for you to create an account.
If something changes
If the app changes in a way that makes this text wrong, we update it here. For an important change we will say so in the app itself.
